THE SHORT ANSWER

Say what you are proposing, give enough detail for a decision, and wait for an answer. If you cannot accept, state that before offering another option. A reason explains your answer; it does not automatically tell the other person whether you want to make a different plan.

Give the invitation an activity and a time

Asking whether someone is free checks availability. Inviting them to eat together proposes an activity. You can do both, but do not assume that being free means they have accepted whatever you had in mind. 得閒 describes having free time; it is not a promise to join a plan.

For a first attempt, choose one day and one activity. A long list of possibilities can be difficult to follow when you are still learning. You can always offer a second choice after hearing what does or does not work. The written question below is an invitation, not a demand to explain their whole schedule.

星期六一齊食飯,好唔好?

sing1 kei4 luk6 jat1 cai4 sik6 faan6 hou2 m4 hou2

Shall we have a meal together on Saturday?

Make your answer clear before explaining it

If you cannot come, a brief refusal gives the reason a clear purpose. 唔好意思 can introduce an apologetic refusal, but the rest of the sentence still needs to communicate your answer. A lengthy explanation without that answer may leave the invitation unresolved.

The clips about spending carefully or having no energy for socialising describe constraints. They can explain why a particular plan is unsuitable, but they do not themselves specify another date, a cheaper activity or whether you want to meet at all. Add the information you actually intend instead of expecting the listener to infer it.

Change one part of the plan

An alternative can change the time, place or activity. Changing one detail at a time makes it easier to see what is being agreed. If Saturday is the problem, try Sunday; if the price is the problem, suggest a different activity rather than changing the day without addressing the cost.

In this written exchange, both people confirm the replacement day. The final phrase 一言為定 marks an agreement in the clip’s wording. Save a firm agreement for the point at which you really have one; it would be confusing immediately after a suggestion that the other person has not accepted.

Check what remains undecided

Agreeing on Sunday does not settle the meeting time or location. Before ending, identify what still needs deciding and who will send that information. You can agree to a day while leaving the restaurant open, as long as both people understand that.

Practise three endings: acceptance, refusal without another plan, and an agreed alternative. Do not make an alternative compulsory. Sometimes a person simply cannot or does not want to join. The language exercise is to make the answer understandable, not to persuade somebody into a different answer. Listen for what was accepted rather than counting how many positive words appeared.

YOUR TURN

Try it yourself

You cannot meet on Saturday, but Sunday works. Decline the first day and ask about the second.

See one possible answer

星期六唔得,星期日得唔得? states the problem and offers one replacement. If your friend agrees, confirm Sunday and then settle the time and place. Their availability is still an answer you need to hear.

Keep these in mind

  • Availability and acceptance are different decisions.
  • A reason does not automatically propose an alternative.
  • Confirm the new plan before treating it as agreed.
