How we teach

Lessons pair Traditional Chinese with an English meaning and Jyutping, the letter-and-tone-number guide to Cantonese pronunciation. Saved Cantonese audio lets you hear each phrase before you practise using it. The app includes short conversations, listening, and phrase-building activities.

The saved lesson audio includes generated voices selected for the app. It plays from recordings; the app does not replace missing recordings with device text-to-speech or synthetic tones.

Our free web phrase library gives you a way to explore a topic, hear a saved recording, and decide what you want to practise next.

Start at your own pace

The app is free to download. Its first stage is free to learn, with no account or trial countdown. More lessons, full Word Bank access, and additional practice are available through an optional monthly Full Course subscription; the current price is shown in the app before you subscribe.

Your learning progress stays on your device. In speaking activities, a short attempt is recorded only when you use the microphone control; the attempt is temporary and is not uploaded. See the privacy policy for details.

Where you can use it

Canto School is available for iPhone running iOS 16.4 or later. There is no Android version available right now.

The Auntie character you may know from our short videos is part of the welcome. The app’s lesson audio is separate from that character.
