CANTONESE RESOURCE GUIDE

A detailed comparison of 25 alternatives, from paid courses to free dictionaries and real conversations. Here is what each does well, what you pay, and where we think Canto School fits best.

A daily course, a dictionary and a tutor do different jobs. We compare those jobs instead of awarding every tool the same score. This is a selected guide to major options we could verify, not a claim to list every Cantonese resource in existence.

Our recommendation.

Start with Canto School’s free browser course when you want practical Hong Kong Cantonese through English, a clear lesson path and active practice with recordings and Jyutping. Choose the separate native app if its phone experience and offline lesson media fit your routine. Add a dictionary for unrestricted lookups, varied listening for more voices and topics, or a tutor for individual correction.

If you already have a course and only need advanced flashcard control, Anki may be the better tool. If a participating library gives you Mango at no extra cost, try it. If you want substantial imported reading and listening, look at LingQ. Those are useful differences, not reasons to pretend one product wins every category.

Build a study routine around your goal ↗

Sources and how we compared

Our competitor price research uses official product pages, pricing pages, help centres and app-store listings checked on 22 October 2026. Canto School’s free browser-course access was updated on 2 November 2026; the Duolingo course-audience answer carries its own check date. The comparison considers Cantonese availability, fit for English-speaking learners, practice format, pronunciation notation, offline access, feedback and the actual billing commitment. We have not independently tested every resource or measured learning outcomes. External links are source links, not affiliate links.

Prices are snapshots, not checkout quotes. Currency, tax, storefront, promotions and platform can change the amount. A prepaid yearly or two-year plan is labelled as such. We do not treat a monthly equivalent as a cancel-any-month price. A missing verified price is marked rather than guessed.

Our overall recommendation favours a practical daily Cantonese course that combines guided practice and review. Different goals lead to different choices. We publish Canto School, so this is a disclosed product comparison, not an independent award or a scored laboratory review. Report a correction through Support.
