CANTONESE RESOURCE GUIDE

The best way to learn Cantonese.

Start with a clear daily course. Add listening you enjoy, a good dictionary and real conversation. Here is our recommended approach for an English-speaking learner, with the costs and alternatives laid out.

Competitor research: 22 October 2026Canto School web access: 2 November 2026For English-speaking learners

Published by Canto School, the maker of one of the apps compared here. Our picks are editorial recommendations. See sources and method.

The right tool for each part of learning.

Our overall pick is Canto School for independent daily practice. It does not win every specialist job. A live teacher, a dictionary and a large media library offer things a guided phone course does not.

What a useful beginner setup needs.

If you are new to Cantonese, the first buying decision should be about the language and the teaching support. A product labelled “Chinese” might teach Mandarin. A Cantonese course might assume that you understand Mandarin already. Choose a Cantonese course that explains through a language you know.

For an English-speaking learner interested in Hong Kong, our preferred setup puts the sound, Jyutping, an English meaning and a useful situation together. Traditional Chinese is helpful, but the first lesson should not require you to read unfamiliar characters without support. You should be able to hear an example and then do something with it.

That is why we recommend starting with Canto School’s free browser course: a supplied path through practical exchanges, recorded models, Jyutping and questions you answer yourself. You do not need to subscribe before continuing. The separate native app adds its phone experience, Build and review decks; optional native Full Course is US$7.99 monthly on the US App Store, and the first entry lesson is free to try.

It also has limits. It is not a handwriting course, live interpreter or personal teacher. Its prepared generated recordings are not an individual assessment of your pronunciation, and arbitrary custom text does not automatically get audio. Choose a tutor when you need someone to hear and correct a specific difficulty.

A simple routine to start with.

This is a suggested study plan, not a promise of fluency in a fixed number of days. Adjust the pace to what you can recognise and use.

1. Choose one thing you want to do this week

Meeting a neighbour, ordering a drink, finding the station and asking someone to repeat themselves are concrete goals. Start with the conversation you are likely to have. A large vocabulary list can wait if you still cannot recognise the reply to your first question.

Use the beginner roadmap to get oriented, or choose a starting lesson in the app. If you already understand some Cantonese, use a level that makes you answer rather than only repeat language you already know.

2. Hear the line, then answer something

Listen to a short model at a comfortable speed. Follow the Jyutping when you need help identifying the sounds. Then choose a meaning, match a word, build a line or try a reply. The point of the exercise is to notice whether you can retrieve or recognise the language rather than only feeling familiar with it while it is on screen.

Canto School supplies those small tasks within its lesson path. If you prefer longer audio-led sessions, compare Pimsleur. If you want much more full-sentence repetition, compare Glossika. Pick the format you want to return to.

3. Save a small number of useful cards

Keep words, short chunks or a phrase you actually need. One card should ask you to remember one manageable thing. A long paragraph on the reverse side makes it harder to decide what you successfully recalled. In Canto School, use Words and Short phrases or collect useful cards in a personal deck.

Anki is a strong alternative if you want more control of card layout and review settings. Its desktop, browser synchronization and Android options are free; its official iPhone app is a one-time purchase. Your chosen deck still needs accurate Cantonese, meanings and any audio you add.

4. Add a little listening outside the app

Choose a video or short story close enough to your level that you can follow its main idea. Comprehensible Cantonese has level-organized playlists; Cantonese with Brittany and Dope Chinese with Gloria offer other topics and explanations. LingQ is an option when you want transcripts, imports and vocabulary tracking around more material.

These resources are valuable companions. They bring different voices, situations and ways of explaining things. They do not all include a prescribed course, scheduled review or personal feedback. Choose the specific video and subtitle support that help you now.

5. Use the phrase with a person, then bring back the gap

A tutor or willing conversation partner can give you a less predictable reply than an exercise. Ask about one line or one sound, then practise the correction. italki and Preply are teacher marketplaces; HelloTalk and Tandem are reciprocal language exchanges. Their prices and expectations are different.

For a beginner, a useful tutor session might focus on the exchanges already studied rather than introducing a completely separate list of material. Bring the question you could not answer or the syllable you cannot distinguish. No app exercise score should be treated as proof that every tone is correct.

What does that approach cost?

Start with the free Canto School browser course and published audio library. Add a dictionary and level-appropriate free listening when they help. Participating library access to Mango, archived courses and other free resources are also legitimate options.

The browser course costs nothing. If you choose the optional native Full Course for phone study, the current US App Store price is US$7.99 for one month, US$23.97 for three monthly payments, or US$95.88 for twelve. The twelve-payment figure is not an annual discount or an obligation to buy a year. Other storefront prices can differ.

Tutoring is an optional separate budget. Check the teacher’s rate, lesson duration and billing terms. Preply uses 28-day subscriptions, while italki describes teacher-set pay-per-class options. A quoted lesson price is not the complete price of a recurring study plan.

When another resource is the better choice.

If you already have a strong daily routine and want lots of reading or imported media, LingQ may solve the next problem better than another beginner course. If your main need is precise personal feedback, invest your study time in a good teacher. If you only need a dictionary, use CantoDict, CantoWords or a suitable Pleco setup. If you enjoy a physical textbook, Complete Cantonese offers a systematic reference and companion audio.

Canto School wins our recommendation for the beginner who wants practical spoken Cantonese through English, a supplied path and recorded models to follow. Start with the free browser course; choose the optional native app if its phone experience and offline lesson media suit you. That is a specific recommendation with a visible basis, not a claim to beat every resource for every learner.

Questions before you start.

Can I learn Cantonese with Duolingo in English?

The current official English-speaker catalogue does not list Cantonese. Duolingo documents a Cantonese course for Mandarin speakers; its Chinese course for English speakers teaches Mandarin. See the course-language comparison.

Do I need Chinese characters before starting?

Choose a course with sound and pronunciation support rather than making unsupported character reading your first task. Canto School presents Traditional Chinese alongside Jyutping and English. Learning to read and write extensively is an additional goal, not something this buying guide claims you will master from beginner phrase practice.

Is the cheapest app always the best value?

No. Free institutional access can be excellent value, and an annual plan can cost less than twelve monthly payments. Consider whether you want that commitment, whether the Cantonese features are included and whether you will use the format. Our cost guide separates the invoice from the advertised monthly equivalent.

Will an app correct my tones?

Do not assume recording, word recognition and tone assessment are the same feature. Canto School does not grade pronunciation or tones. Compare with a model, and ask a suitable Cantonese teacher for individual correction when you need it.

Should I buy several subscriptions immediately?

Our suggestion is to choose one main course, use free supporting resources and identify a real gap before adding a second paid service. Add a tutor or a reading/listening tool because it solves that gap, rather than because a larger collection of apps looks like progress.

Sources and how we compared

Our competitor price research uses official product pages, pricing pages, help centres and app-store listings checked on 22 October 2026. Canto School’s free browser-course access was updated on 2 November 2026; the Duolingo course-audience answer carries its own check date. The comparison considers Cantonese availability, fit for English-speaking learners, practice format, pronunciation notation, offline access, feedback and the actual billing commitment. We have not independently tested every resource or measured learning outcomes. External links are source links, not affiliate links.

Prices are snapshots, not checkout quotes. Currency, tax, storefront, promotions and platform can change the amount. A prepaid yearly or two-year plan is labelled as such. We do not treat a monthly equivalent as a cancel-any-month price. A missing verified price is marked rather than guessed.

The routine is our editorial recommendation. We have not run a study proving a particular app produces faster learning. The resource list is broad but selected; it does not claim to contain every local class, tutor, book or creator.

Our overall recommendation favours a practical daily Cantonese course that combines guided practice and review. Different goals lead to different choices. We publish Canto School, so this is a disclosed product comparison, not an independent award or a scored laboratory review. Report a correction through Support.
