Start with a real exchange
A greeting is a good first step because you can use it immediately. Learn hello, a morning greeting, and a casual goodbye as separate choices for different moments. Then add a polite phrase such as 唔該 when you ask for help or thank someone for a small service.
Say the phrase aloud after hearing it. On your next listen, focus on the rhythm and the ending instead of trying to memorise every written character at once.
Give yourself a way to keep talking
Beginners do not need a perfect reply to every question. Learn to say that you do not understand, ask someone to repeat a sentence, and ask them to slow down. Those requests turn a difficult moment into another chance to listen.
Try a two-line practice exchange: greet someone, then ask for the line again. This is more useful than reciting a long word list without a situation attached.
Use Jyutping and audio together
Jyutping shows how Cantonese syllables are written with letters and tone numbers. The spelling helps you return to a phrase later; the audio lets you hear how it sounds in context. Read the written line, play the recording, and follow the syllables once more.
Keep the goal small: one greeting, one courtesy phrase, and one useful question is enough material for a focused first practice session. Repeat them on another day before adding a new topic.
Move from phrases to conversations
Choose a situation you care about next. Ordering a drink, asking where something is, or introducing yourself gives each new phrase a purpose. Listen to the question you might hear as well as the answer you want to say.
Canto School continues this path in short app lessons with recorded examples and practice. You can use these web guides to choose a topic first, then carry that language into the app.
