THE SHORT ANSWER

Before telling a private story, check whether the person can talk and who else may be listening. Then state what you are asking them to keep private. Permission to hear something is different from permission to repeat it, so ask a separate question when the audience changes.

Check the listening situation first

你仲開住免提呀 points out that speakerphone is still on. The clip identifies the phone setting; it does not identify who can hear the call. If the audience matters, ask about people present as well as the device.

You can also say that you would prefer to talk later. That gives the listener a practical next step without requiring you to reveal the story first. Keep the first question simple. A question about whether somebody is alone should be tied to the conversation you want to have, rather than delivered as an unexplained demand for personal information.

Name what is meant to stay private

得我哋知就好喇 says to keep something between the people involved. It needs a clear referent: which story, detail or information are you talking about? If several topics have been discussed, state that rather than assume the listener knows which part you mean.

You can make the requested action explicit with a sentence asking the listener not to tell other people. This is more informative than simply describing the information as interesting or personal. The listener can then accept the request or tell you that they cannot make the commitment you are seeking.

Ask before changing the audience

The fact that you heard a story does not establish what you may repeat. If you want to tell someone else, ask about that person and that information. A reply may allow part of the story, decline the request or ask you to leave out a detail.

The written exchange below concerns one named listener, Ah Ming. Naming Ah Ming in the question makes the proposed audience clear; 佢 in the final acknowledgement refers back to him. Do not turn a limited answer into permission to share the story in a larger group. The same principle of clear reference applies to a photo, a message screenshot or something said on a call.

Keep a pause or refusal understandable

Someone may decide they do not want to continue the story. Acknowledge that rather than pressing for a more interesting explanation. You can say that you can talk another time if they want. A pause in disclosure does not need to be filled with speculation about what happened.

Practise the three checks independently: available to talk, private enough to talk, allowed to repeat. A yes to one is not a yes to all three. The exercise is complete when both speakers know the requested boundary, not when the listener has learned every detail of the story.

YOUR TURN

Try it yourself

You want to repeat a friend’s story to Ah Ming. The friend says to keep it between you. Give an acknowledgement that states what you will do.

See one possible answer

好,我唔會同佢講 (hou2 ngo5 m4 wui5 tung4 keoi5 gong2), “Okay, I will not tell him,” responds to the requested limit. If other people or other details are involved, ask about those separately rather than widening the permission yourself.

Keep these in mind

  • Check the audience as well as the phone setting.
  • Say which information the privacy request concerns.
  • Hearing a story and repeating it are separate actions.
