How to order a meal at a cha chaan teng in Cantonese

Begin with the actual item you want. If you cannot yet read its name, point to the menu entry while speaking; the shared visual reference does part of the work. Keep your finger on the entry until the server has identified it. This is more precise than saying “this” while looking at a page with ten possible meals.

The recorded milk-tea request gives you a complete polite frame. Notice that one cup belongs with the drink: it is not a template to attach indiscriminately to every dish. For an unfamiliar meal, learn its whole menu name and quantity expression together. You do not need a complicated introduction before placing a simple order.

A prepared order can make you miss an easy reply. 飲咩呀 asks which drink; 凍定熱呀 asks cold or hot. Those are different decisions. If you hear the second question, repeating your entire meal order may leave the temperature unresolved. A short answer such as 熱, jit6, “hot,” can be enough when the drink is already clear.

Another question is 喺度食定拎走: eating here or taking away. In Auntie’s clip, the speaker is giving the staff-side question. Practise answering it instead of automatically repeating it back. The question does not mean that you should collect the food immediately; it establishes how this order will be served.

A server may ask whether you want anything else. Recognising this prevents a common beginner problem: treating every new sentence as a question about the meal you already chose. 唔使喇，唔該 is a useful closing response when you are finished ordering. Leave room for the server to confirm before turning back to your friend.

This assembled practice exchange uses existing recorded phrase wording. It is a sample conversation, not the transcript of the Auntie video. Read both roles once, then cover the English and answer only the server’s turns. Change the drink on the next attempt so that you have to listen.

Ordering, checking a missing item and asking for the bill happen at different moments. Auntie’s 我嗌嘅嘢食呢 asks about the food ordered; 唔該埋單 asks to settle the bill. If one dish is missing, identify it before moving to payment. That gives the staff a specific problem to investigate.

You also do not need to solve every misunderstanding by starting the order again. Show the item or order slip, pause, and let the server check. For your first visit, a clear meal choice, two recognised questions and one closing response are a manageable set. You can add substitutions once this exchange feels familiar.
