THE SHORT ANSWER
After a verb, 吓 or 下 can present an action as brief, tentative or lightly undertaken. The examples here use haa5, as in 睇吓 tai2 haa5, have a look. This is not the same job as the standalone exclamation 吓? haa2, meaning something like Huh?
睇吓: give the action a small scale
我睇吓啫 tells a shop assistant that the speaker is just having a look. 睇 supplies looking, 吓 presents that action lightly, and 啫 limits the claim. You do not have to decide on a purchase to use the line.
This is a useful listening exercise because the whole message is short. First find 睇. Then listen to what follows it rather than jumping straight from I to just in the English translation. The Cantonese phrase divides the work across several small pieces.

The same small-action idea with other verbs
我哋要傾吓 proposes a conversation. 我要獎勵吓自己 talks about giving oneself a little reward. Neither expression promises an exact number of minutes. Treat briefly or a little as a way into the meaning, not as a measurement.
畀佢發揮吓啦 gives someone room to show what they can do. Its English hook is Let him cook; the actual Cantonese does not talk about cooking. Focus on 發揮吓 in the recorded line, and keep the idiomatic English prompt separate from the verb you are learning.

Why the transcript may use 吓 or 下
The catalogue has both 睇吓 and 睇下, with haa5 in these examples. Words.hk lists 下 and 吓 together for this verbal use and also records other readings and constructions. The characters alone are therefore not a pronunciation recipe.
Do not apply this reading to every 下 you meet. In words about below, the next item, or the afternoon, you need that word’s own pronunciation. Likewise, a surprised standalone 吓? is a separate item. Keep a phrase-length note so that its role stays visible.
| Example type | What you are learning |
|---|---|
| 睇吓 / 睇下 in these clips | A verb followed by a small-action marker, haa5. |
| Standalone 吓? | An exclamation or request for clarification, commonly haa2. |

Use it inside a complete request
可唔可以攬下我 puts the small action inside a permission question. The request is not polite simply because 下 appears: the situation, relationship and action all matter. Its grammar makes sense as a request for a hug, but a learner still needs an appropriate personal context.
For practice, use looking and talking before more personal actions. Identify the verb, mark the following 吓, and describe the size or tentativeness of the proposed action. Keep the complete line intact when replaying the recording; tiny isolated fragments can make the connection harder to hear.

YOUR TURN
Try it yourself
In 我睇吓啫 and 我哋要傾吓, identify the verbs and describe what 吓 contributes. Does it promise that either action will last exactly one minute?
See one possible answer
The verbs are 睇 tai2, look, and 傾 king1, talk. 吓 frames them as lightly undertaken or limited actions; it is not a stopwatch. The full shopping line also uses 啫 to limit what the shopper is claiming to do.
Keep these in mind
- Learn the marker with the verb it follows.
- Brief or tentative does not specify a fixed duration.
- Check the whole word before assigning a reading to 下 or 吓.
