Why you can read Jyutping but still miss a spoken Cantonese sentence

Choose 我睇吓啫 as a first short line. Read its meaning and Jyutping, then look away while replaying the Cantonese part. Can you recognise the message without reading? If the vocabulary itself is unknown, learn that before judging your listening.

The video includes an English setup as well as Cantonese. Focus your task on the Cantonese response, and do not count the English hook as part of a Cantonese transcript. Because subtitles are visible in the video, looking away or covering that part of the screen is the simplest way to make this a listening attempt.

For 可唔可以搭枱呀, try these study groups: 可唔可以 / 搭枱 / 呀. They identify the request frame, the action and the ending. The slashes are your reading aid, not a claim that the speaker pauses at each point.

Listen once for the whole line, once for the action, and once for the ending. Then return to the whole sentence. If you repeatedly isolate tiny fragments, you can lose the context that helps you recognise them. A missed ending should send you back to the complete request, not to an invented new pronunciation.

LSHK’s Jyutping scheme writes a tone number at the end of each syllable. Use that information as a question to investigate: did I miss the syllable entirely, confuse the final consonant, or lose track of its tone? These are different problems and need different checks.

Research by Li, Guan and Chen found effects of preceding tones on the realised pitch of Cantonese rising tones. That does not erase the tone categories. It does explain why a clean teaching contour is not an exact trace of every syllable in connected speech.

Try 喺度食定拎走 next. Listen for the choice between eating here and taking away; then locate 定, which connects the alternatives. This is a different target from trying to transcribe every sound perfectly on the first pass.

Write one useful note: I recognised the two options but missed the connector, or I read the final word correctly but did not recognise it in the recording. Repeat that exact task later. A specific observation tells you what to practise next; a judgement such as my listening is terrible does not.
