THE SHORT ANSWER

Asking a Cantonese question does not mean replacing the last syllable’s lexical tone with a rising tone. Tone categories help identify words and particles; intonation also shapes how the utterance is delivered. Cantonese questions can be marked by grammar and particles, and tone and intonation interact in speech rather than acting as two independent switches.

Separate word identity from the whole utterance

Jyutping places a tone number after each syllable. That number identifies a tone category; it is not a musical note or a command to use the same absolute pitch as a particular speaker. Keep the letters and number together when practising a word.

Intonation concerns the delivery of a larger utterance. Research by Tsui and Tong examines how question versus statement contexts affect the realisation of Cantonese sentence-final particles. Their findings show interaction with lexical tone, not a rule that speakers discard lexical distinctions at the end.

呢個辣唔辣㗎 contains the positive-negative contrast 辣唔辣. 可唔可以搭枱呀 contains 可唔可以. Those structures do important work before you consider the delivery of the final particle.

In the first line, 辣 appears twice with laat6. Do not rewrite either occurrence as a rising-tone word simply because the sentence asks a question. The final 㗎 belongs to the recorded question as a particle with its own reading in the transcript.

Use a contour drawing as a guide, not an audio measurement

A tidy tone diagram represents a category or teaching model. A real utterance includes transitions between syllables and changes in the speaker’s pitch range. The 2018 particle study found that question-related effects were largely associated with a broader pitch rise in its experimental material, rather than a simple local rise at the end.

That result should not become a new universal rule for every question. The study concerns particular particles and controlled comparisons. The Auntie clips are useful examples of complete questions, but they are not a matched scientific experiment in which every word and speaking condition is held constant.

Inspect one line without inventing a tone change

Play 呢個辣唔辣㗎 and follow the written syllables. First recognise the question pattern. Next locate the two 辣 syllables and the final particle. If the last part sounds higher or longer than you expected, do not immediately change the transcript’s tone number; compare the whole phrase and seek a clearer example of the particular syllable.

For a true statement-versus-question pitch comparison, you would need carefully matched recordings and an explanation of their context. Until then, practise the existing complete questions as recorded. A good beginner objective is to preserve the words and intended question, rather than manufacture an English-style final rise.

YOUR TURN

Try it yourself

In 呢個辣唔辣㗎, identify the question construction and the tone number written for 辣. Does the question mark instruct you to pronounce 辣 as tone 2?

See one possible answer

The construction is 辣唔辣, spicy or not spicy, and 辣 is written laat6 in both occurrences. No: the question mark does not change it to laat2. Sentence-level delivery can interact with pitch, but it is not permission to substitute a different lexical tone category.

Keep these in mind

  • Keep lexical tone and utterance delivery conceptually distinct.
  • Identify the question’s grammar as well as its sound.
  • Do not treat a diagram or an unmatched clip as a measured pitch experiment.
