In the clip, the phrase is complete even without naming the people already seated, because the immediate situation supplies that information. Use it when sharing is actually the question, rather than as a general translation of “Can I sit anywhere?”

A seat question has a narrower target. 呢個位有冇人坐呀 asks whether this seat is occupied. It can help establish the facts, but permission to move a chair or join a table may still need a separate answer. Point gently to the place you mean, since a large table may have several empty-looking seats.

A positive answer can be short. A refusal may also be brief because the person is holding the seat for somebody else. Do not interpret a short response automatically as hostility; concentrate on whether the answer gives you the space you asked about. If you are unsure, leave the belongings where they are and check with staff.

The switch makes the activity about understanding a social decision, not merely reciting the one request. Keep the answer truthful within the imagined situation rather than saying yes because that is the only response you practised.

Actual seating customs depend on the venue and its current arrangement. Follow the host’s instructions where staff manage tables. You can be considerate without memorising a long etiquette speech: ask a specific question, pause for the reply, move only your own belongings and keep your group’s order identifiable.
