EVERYDAY CANTONESE

What to say when you do not understand Cantonese

A new learner can still take part in a conversation. These short requests give the other person a way to help you keep going.

Say what you understood

我明白 means “I understand.” 我唔明 means “I do not understand.” Learning the pair helps you respond honestly without pretending you caught every word.

If you understood one part, it is fine to say so and ask about the rest. Repeat the sound you heard, then make the clarification request instead of stopping the exchange.

Ask for another chance to hear it

可唔可以講多次呀? asks someone to say it again. 可唔可以講慢啲呀? asks whether they can speak a little more slowly. Both requests are worth learning early, because you can use them in almost any topic.

Listen to the phrase you are asking for help with, then to the repair request. Practise saying the request promptly, because its purpose is to use it in the middle of a real conversation.

Ask about a word or meaning

呢個係咩意思? asks what something means. Use it when you can identify the word or expression you want explained. If you are completely lost, first ask for the whole sentence again.

You can ask whether the person speaks English when that is the clearest way to solve an urgent misunderstanding. The goal is a useful exchange, not a perfect test of memory.
