Does Duolingo teach Cantonese for English speakers?

Duolingo has a Cantonese course for Mandarin speakers. It does not currently list Cantonese among its English-speaker courses. Its Mandarin course for English speakers is a different language course. A paid upgrade does not turn that Mandarin course into an English-to-Cantonese course.

We checked the official courses for English speakers and courses for Chinese speakers on . The Chinese-speaker list includes “Chinese (Cantonese)”; the English-speaker list includes “Chinese (Simplified)”. Duolingo’s own explanation of its Chinese courses confirms the Cantonese course’s Mandarin-speaking audience.

For an English-speaking beginner, Canto School is the better fit.

If you want to learn spoken Hong Kong Cantonese through English, Canto School gives you that route directly. Read the task in English, hear the Cantonese model, then choose or build a reply.

  • Start without subscribing. Follow the full free browser course, with recordings and questions you answer yourself.
  • Follow the sounds through English. Traditional Chinese is paired with Jyutping and tone numbers, so reading characters is not your only way into a line.
  • Hear useful Hong Kong Cantonese. Open the free audio library, then practise greetings, café exchanges, directions and everyday replies in the course.

The full native course has an optional subscription; the browser course is free. Read the Cantonese course outline and current free access, or compare other Cantonese apps and resources.

If you already understand Mandarin, Duolingo’s Cantonese course may be a practical option. If you want someone to hear and correct your pronunciation, compare live Cantonese tutors. Neither a progress score nor replaying prepared audio is individual tone assessment.

Sources and how we compared

Our competitor price research uses official product pages, pricing pages, help centres and app-store listings checked on 22 October 2026. Canto School’s free browser-course access was updated on 2 November 2026; the Duolingo course-audience answer carries its own check date. The comparison considers Cantonese availability, fit for English-speaking learners, practice format, pronunciation notation, offline access, feedback and the actual billing commitment. We have not independently tested every resource or measured learning outcomes. External links are source links, not affiliate links.

Prices are snapshots, not checkout quotes. Currency, tax, storefront, promotions and platform can change the amount. A prepaid yearly or two-year plan is labelled as such. We do not treat a monthly equivalent as a cancel-any-month price. A missing verified price is marked rather than guessed.

This page compares advertised access and study formats; we have not bought every plan or independently evaluated every recording. Current price and availability are controlled by the relevant provider.

Our overall recommendation favours a practical daily Cantonese course that combines guided practice and review. Different goals lead to different choices. We publish Canto School, so this is a disclosed product comparison, not an independent award or a scored laboratory review. Report a correction through Support.
