THE SHORT ANSWER

到 dou3 can connect an action or description to an extent or result: 凍到震 dung3 dou3 zan3 means so cold that one shivers. Look at what comes before and after 到. This lesson concerns that construction, not every word or expression written with 到.

凍到震: a description followed by its result

呢度凍到震呀 describes a place as cold enough to make the speaker shiver. 凍 gives the condition and 震 supplies the result. In English you may use so…that, but the Cantonese example does not need a separate English-style that word.

Picture two panels: a cold room and a person shivering. Then connect them while saying the complete line. This is an explanation of the words, not evidence that the clip was recorded in a cold room or that anyone was actually shivering.

呢度凍到震呀

It's so cold in here I'm shivering

The result need not be a single word

我餓到發脾氣喇 connects hunger to losing one’s temper. The whole phrase 發脾氣 is the result. In 笑到我肚都痛, the result has its own subject-like phrase, 我肚: my stomach hurts. These examples show why counting words after 到 is less useful than identifying the outcome.

For a reading exercise, underline the action or condition once and the following result twice. Leave the sentence-final particle outside that highlighted result when it is doing its separate conversational job. Then explain the connection in plain English.

An apparent result can be deliberate exaggeration

成個造型靚到爆 praises a whole look very enthusiastically. 爆 is not a literal prediction of an explosion. The construction can support exaggerated praise as well as a physical result such as shivering.

That does not make every colourful result interchangeable. Keep one established expression intact before inventing new combinations. A learner’s first goal is to recognise the relationship between the description and what follows, not to attach the most dramatic word available to every adjective.

Check the tone and construction before grouping examples

到 appears in other constructions too. In the catalogue’s 做得到, the result is pronounced dou2, and the 得 marks achievability. That is a different comparison from the dou3 degree/result link studied here. Both the pronunciation and the surrounding structure matter.

The CUHK verb-phrase companion includes result and extent constructions as a separate topic. Use this article’s narrow set for practice: cold leading to shivering, hunger to temper, laughter to pain, and praise expressed through exaggeration. Add new examples only when you can explain what the result phrase contributes.

YOUR TURN

Try it yourself

Break 呢度凍到震呀 and 我餓到發脾氣喇 into condition and result. Is 爆 in 成個造型靚到爆 the same kind of literal result?

See one possible answer

凍 is cold and 震 is shivering; 餓 is hunger and 發脾氣 is losing one’s temper. In the appearance compliment, 靚到爆 is emphatic praise rather than a literal explosion. The shared frame can be interpreted literally or figuratively depending on the words and situation.

Keep these in mind

  • Find the condition or action, then the result.
  • A result phrase can contain several words.
  • Do not group every 到 together without checking its reading and construction.
