Canon events, lore drops and plot armor in Cantonese

Merriam-Webster describes the social-media “canon event” as a formative experience, often used playfully about relatable episodes. Its discussion links the phrase’s wider popularity to Across the Spider-Verse, while distinguishing that use from the broader concept of accepted fictional canon. The life metaphor does not prove that an event was inevitable.

In Mei’s invented story, an awkward rehearsal becomes a lesson she remembers. 呢啲係人生必經階段 presents the experience as a stage people go through. This removes the technical story label and makes a broad life-stage claim instead. It is stronger about necessity than simply saying an event was memorable.

Lore can mean a person’s or fictional world’s backstory. A “lore drop” reveals some of that information. If Mei suddenly says she toured with a choir years ago, 突然爆咗段往事 describes the unexpected revelation of a past episode. The event being revealed may be old even though hearing it is new.

A twist concerns what happens next or how a situation turns out. If the show’s organiser unexpectedly asks Mei to host, 估唔到會咁喎 expresses surprise at that development. It does not itself say a hidden history has been disclosed. The difference is new information about the past versus a surprising turn in the present story.

Plot armor names a fictional character’s convenient protection from failure or death because the story needs them to continue. In a playful real-life comparison, it treats remarkable luck as if a writer were arranging the outcome. It is not evidence that an actual person cannot fail.

我有主角光環 retains a protagonist image through a protective halo. By contrast, “main character energy” can describe someone’s presence or self-presentation without asserting any protected outcome. In Mei’s story, commanding attention onstage and being rescued by an unlikely coincidence are separate observations.

“Do it for the plot” encourages an action because it might produce a story. The recorded response makes that motivation explicit: take a chance so there is a story to tell. It concerns a choice before the event, unlike a lore drop about an earlier experience or a comment about protected success.

Use the comparison as a reading tool. Ask whether the post names background, development, surprise, protection or a reason to act. Then inspect the Cantonese sentence for the part it preserves. You do not need to retain a fictional metaphor when a plain explanation better serves the reader, but you should notice the change.
