THE SHORT ANSWER

Use relationship language to clarify what people have actually said and agreed, rather than to infer their intentions from a label. A statement of friendship, a complaint about inconsistency and a description of a temporary separation do different jobs. An English dating term may need a fuller Cantonese explanation.

Take an explicit statement seriously

Auntie’s “we are only friends” identifies the relationship as friendship. The limiting word makes the boundary central to the sentence. It should not be treated as a coded invitation to keep pursuing somebody until they say something different.

In a real conversation, you can ask for clarification if the situation is unclear, but the answer deserves to be heard as an answer. Learning the grammar helps you recognise the meaning; it does not provide a method for reading hidden consent or intention.

Describe the pattern without declaring a motive

The hot-and-cold line describes inconsistent behaviour toward the speaker. It expresses an observation or complaint, not proof of why the other person behaves that way. Busy schedules, uncertainty or a disagreement would call for different conversations.

If you want clarity, name the specific difference you noticed and ask about the present situation. A broad label such as “mixed signals” can start the discussion, but it cannot establish whether you both want the same kind of contact. Keep the question about what happens next concrete.

Do not force an English label into one word

Words.hk records 曖昧 for ambiguity, including uncertain romantic relations. That does not make it an exact substitute for every use of “situationship.” An English term may bundle together uncertainty, expectations and a lack of an agreed label; your Cantonese explanation should state which feature matters.

When interpreting a clip, compare the actual sentence with its English hook. Ask what the Cantonese explicitly says and what the title adds. That distinction prevents you from attributing a whole internet definition to a phrase that only describes one part of it.

Keep rejection clear and proportionate

Auntie’s not-my-type line expresses a personal preference directly. It is not a neutral compliment and may feel blunt when said to the person concerned. You can be clear that you do not want a romantic relationship without adding a judgment about somebody’s worth or attractiveness.

For learning, distinguish describing a preference to a friend from responding to an invitation. The first discusses your taste; the second needs an answer that the other person can understand. Avoid softening a refusal so much that it appears to promise a later yes.

Check what a relationship statement refers to

The temporary-separation line refers to a period in the past. It does not, by itself, state the current relationship or establish what either person agreed during that period. A dramatic reference can make the line memorable while leaving those factual questions unresolved.

Practise separating three timelines: what was true then, what is true now and what is proposed next. If a conversation becomes confusing, return to those questions. Language can make an agreement explicit, but a clip title or a meme cannot settle a disagreement about facts.

YOUR TURN

Try it yourself

Someone says 我哋淨係朋友嚟㗎. What does the sentence establish, and what should you avoid adding to its meaning?

See one possible answer

It states that the relationship is only friendship. Avoid adding an imagined promise that persistence will change the answer; that is not part of the sentence.

Keep these in mind

  • Distinguish a stated boundary from an interpretation of behaviour.
  • Explain the relevant feature of an English dating label.
  • Keep past status, current status and future plans separate.
